Question:
What purpose do mitochondria serve in energetics?
Answer:
The mitochondria function in energetics by transferring electrons into orbitals of low energy and using the energy thus gained to make ATP, the "energy currency" of our bodies, which our cells can then use for many purposes. The "used" electrons end up in orbitals of low energy and are given to oxygen which thereupon turns into water.
