Project Profile

Improvements to Electrical Sustainability at the Long Campus

Over the past several years, the Long Campus at UT Health San Antonio has experienced several power outages of the main electrical switching station 1.0. This equipment is where the main CPS power comes into the Long Campus. The main electrical switching station equipment is dated – having lasted nearly twice its life expectancy. Without action, future electrical outages are inevitable. In continued support of the UT Health mission, it is imperative to keep campus operations running with a new distribution infrastructure.

Facilities Management has worked on the design and implementation of a new Switchgear, Automatic Transfer Switch, and Transformers for the electrical sustainability at the Long Campus. Design, manufacture and installation of two large transformers was completed in 2015. These transformers provide critical support to the Medical School Building. The design of the switchgear was completed in 2016 and is currently being manufactured in Houston, Texas. This new gear will be installed within an environment controlled room and will possess networking capabilities enabling Facilities Management to monitor power quality and breaker states. Installation of the switchgear is expected to be complete end of June 2018.
