The HSC 'Shared Path' -
Contributing to Campus Life Improvement
In his 'University Outlook' address on September 29, 2009, Dr. William L.Henrich, M.D., president of the Health Science Center, announced that one of the many planned enhancements to HSC campus life is the construction of a jogging/walking trail - a "shared path" that will integrate with the 2.2-mile walking trail built by the San Antonio Medical Foundation that opened to the public on July 14, 2009. The path is almost a mile long and originates from the side of the track alongside Babcock Road and runs along the grass perimeter of the HSC on Louis Pasteur Drive. The path makes a left turn on Floyd Curl Drive where it ends near the parking lot behind the Academic and Administration building.
Aldo Reyes, an Engineer for Facilities Management at the time, performed a survey on the proposed trail with the chosen contractor by placing three-foot orange wooden stakes to define the path. "We want to make the path interesting by giving it curves as it snakes through the many trees that line the perimeter of the campus along Louis Pasteur Drive", said Aldo.
The path is 4,500 feet long and 8 feet wide and is made of crushed limestone and includes several 'curb cuts' to allow handicapped access. Eventually, the HSC shared path will be connected to the existing walking/jogging trail located in the undeveloped, wooded areas near the South Texas Research Facility and Greehey Academic and Research campus.
The project began in October of 2009 and was completed in February of the following year. Dwight Beckingham of Facilities Management's Project Management and Construction Division was assigned as the project manager. "My job as project manager was to schedule and oversee the job with the contractor from start to finish", said Dwight. "I needed to ensure that the project was done according to plan and followed all safety regulations."
The walking/jogging trail, as intended by Medical Center leadership, will inspire San Antonians to include exercising as a key component in individual wellness and health programs.
