The HSC 'Shared Path' -
Contributing to Campus Life Improvement

In his 'University Outlook' address on September 29, 2009, Dr. William L.Henrich, M.D., president of the Health Science Center, announced that one of the many planned enhancements to HSC campus life is the construction of a jogging/walking trail - a "shared path" that will integrate with the 2.2-mile walking trail built by the San Antonio Medical Foundation that opened to the public on July 14, 2009. The path will be almost a mile long and will originate from the side of the track alongside Babcock Road and will run along the grass perimeter of the HSC on Louis Pasteur Drive. The path will make a left turn on Floyd Curl Drive where it will end near the parking lot behind the Academic and Administration building.

Aldo Reyes, Engineer for Facilities Management, performed a survey on the proposed trail with the chosen contractor by placing three-foot orange wooden stakes to define the path. "We want to make the path interesting by giving it curves as it snakes through the many trees that line the perimeter" of the campus along Louis Pasteur Drive, says Aldo.

Orange stakes have been put on the ground to mark the shared path along Louis Pasteur Drive.

The 4,500 feet long and 8 feet wide path will be made of crushed limestone and will include several 'curb cuts' to allow handicapped access. Eventually, the HSC shared path will be connected to the existing walking/jogging trail located in the undeveloped, wooded areas near the South Texas Research Facility and Greehey Academic and Research campus.

The project is scheduled to start on October 26 with an anticipated completion date of February 23, 2010. Dwight Beckingham of Facilities Management's Project Management and Construction Division has been assigned the project manager and is looking forward to groundbreaking. "My job as project manager is to schedule the job with the contractor from start to finish," says Dwight. "I need to ensure that the project is done according to plan and safety."

The walking/jogging trail, as intended by Medical Center leadership, will inspire San Antonians to include exercising as a key component in individual wellness and health programs.
