Custodial Services Has Gone Green
“Go Green” is what Custodial Services did on March 30, 2009 when Robert Ross, Director of Custodial Services, enrolled his entire department so they may obtain their "Green Cleaning" certification. Green Cleaning describes cleaning methods that aim to protect human health without harming the environment. And while Green Cleaning is a "growing trend around the nation, Custodial Services has been using environmentally-friendly chemicals since the mid 90’s," says Ross.
The class certification was given by JohnsonDiversey/RAMSEY, a SC Johnson family company. The topic discussed was the use of cleaning agents that are environmentally friendly and not harmful to the user or to those in contact with the areas being cleaned. As of March 30, 2009, 100% of all Custodial Services employees have been certified for Green Cleaning. "The University will receive a better trained Housekeeping staff delivering building cleaning services in a manner that is safe and friendly to the environment," said Fernando Terrazas, Work Control Coordinator for Custodial Services. The certification training is just part of the “continuous skill development program” which Ross established in the early 90’s “for all Custodial Services staff members to include proper operation of power equipment, accurate and safe use of supplies and chemicals, and to follow cleaning procedures and guidelines."
In addition to the Green Cleaning certification, Custodial Services also participates in recycling cardboard, office paper, plastic bottles, aluminum cans and print cartridges. The HSC's "Go Green" website shows all of the locations of recycling bins on campus. As it is with the HSC’s history of conservation, Custodial Services is committed to a sustainable future by reducing their impact on the environment and making the lives of students, faculty and staff better and much cleaner. «»
